Very Sharp Teeth: Oliver Queen and the Nerdy Girls

verysharpteeth:

Let’s face it, Chlollie from Smallville was one of my favorite ships ever. I never expected it to happen and figured most of it had to do with the actors having good chemistry and the characters meshing wonderfully. Smallville’s Oliver was a suicidal, self destructive wreck who met someone in just as much pain as he was in and was as tough as him. Chloe faced Oliver’s demons and made him face them too. Chloe was someone Oliver couldn’t fool even when he was fooling himself. No wonder he quickly seemed to worship the ground she walked on. Say what you will, Oliver was never stupid. A powder keg, but not stupid. He saw Chloe how she deserved and she grounded him. Their characters worked as a natural progression of a relationship because they were originally written as friends and then progressed to romance. Chloe and Oliver saw each other at their worst and didn’t mind what they saw enough to have deep levels of “will they/ won’t they” angst.

Fast forward to Arrow. I expected this show to have a believable Oliver/Laurel romance and nothing else from the get go. I immediately liked Felicity, but as Oliver’s nerdy tech girl and surrogate sister. Imagine my surprise when they actually started having significant screen time together that I came to love their relationship more than any scene he and Laurel had together. The Laurel/Oliver scenes were belabored with angst and the tortured prospect of a relationship that just won’t work. Oliver may have changed, but the baggage the two of them are bringing into that relationship is almost insurmountable to me, at least in a believable story line. Especially because remember how I mentioned that Oliver in Smallville was suicidal and self destructive? Because this one is too. Sure, he may not be as deliberately suicidal, but his singlemindedness will destroy him just as quickly while he quietly burns his soul out trying to fulfill a mission from his father that he NEVER should be having to do. Felicity has the luxury of seeing Oliver as what Oliver is…a wreck of a human who can barely function in the real world and is forcing himself to not only do that, but play TWO roles. Felicity might have a crush on Oliver (heck, he’s gorgeous…she’s entitled to), but she’s also seen the abyss that is Oliver’s life. And she hasn’t blinked. If anything she seems to want to comfort him somehow, and rather than the song and dance he gives Laurel or his family, he surprisingly lets her get as close as anyone. Oliver identifies her as a friend, something he just doesn’t have. The writers may have intended for the relationship to be a bickering sibling one, but Felicity is too good of a character and her forthright brains match up to Oliver’s brawn perfectly. Oliver, who is always drawn wire taut, actually seems to relax around Felicity.

Which brings back the point that Arrow’s writers clearly didn’t mean for Felicity and Oliver to have as much chemistry as they do. Once again, it’s the strong, intelligent type that meshes with Oliver’s unhealthy dose of self destruction. Either that type of character is suited for his, or no one can write (or act) Laurel to save their lives.

They make really small bows and arrows, you know. - Chloe Sullivan - Queen

CHLOE: How will I know when to let go?OLIVER: It’s all about your heart. Just listen. Right there between the beats. That’s when you let go…- (Smallville, 9x13 Warrior)

Green Arrow and Watchtower. I repeat: Green Arrow and Watchtower. Ever since they met in Clark’s barn, I really love the sight of them together. And when Clark sends her in his place to the League and she becomes their watchtower? It’s just… too awesome. Oliver and Chloe also have amazing sexual tension, and not to mention they’re ridiculously beautiful on screen together. With the ever growing bridge between Clark and Chloe, Oliver seems to the person that won’t likely push Chloe aside, won’t likely take her help and her friendship for granted. And that’s pretty big, since all Clark’s done lately is take her for granted. How beautiful would their babies be? BEAUTIFUL.
